I was initially interested in Waterstone because of the technology industry focus. Throughout the recruiting process, everyone was friendly, engaging, and made the time to meet with me to discuss any of my questions or concerns. The small firm environment means immediate responsibility, access to senior leadership, and the ability to really make an impact. The company cares about professional success and development, while also incorporating fun events like birthday celebrations, fantasy drafts, and team outings.
What has been your favorite engagement so far?
I recently completed an engagement with a firm that provides contact center solutions (think call routing, IVR, chat, workforce management, etc.). The project focused on assessing the market landscape, including competitive and customer dynamics, to help inform and shape the company’s strategy going forward. My team of three attended the company’s user conference to speak with current customers, interviewed industry analysts, built market models, and conducted competitive research. As the associate on the team, I not only was given ownership of work streams, I also interacted with the executive team and was able to present my work.
What has surprised you about working here?
Regardless of title or experience, everyone plays a part in both internal and external firm initiatives. A month into my role, I coauthored a white paper. I now play a large part in recruiting initiatives across our offices. If you have a passion (whether topic area, firm operations, business development ideas) you are encouraged to pursue it and partners will take the time to help you succeed.
What advice do you have for applicants?
We’re a small firm with an industry focus, so demonstrating interest and knowledge in our work is important. Questions like “Why Waterstone?” or “What companies do you find interesting in technology?” are definitely areas to think through. Fit works both ways, research (website, whitepapers, talk to current employees, etc.) to get a sense of if our work aligns with your goals. Finally, case prep, that will play a part in all interviews!
ASSOCIATE JOB DESCRIPTION
We are currently seeking talented Associate candidates to join Waterstone in both our Chicago and San Francisco Bay Area offices. Associates will primarily be responsible for delivery of client engagements, including structuring and completing quantitative and qualitative analysis, supporting business development efforts, and fostering client relationships. In addition to delivery, Associates will also be expected to contribute to firm development, participating in activities such as recruiting and thought leadership development.
Waterstone fosters an entrepreneurial culture and a results-based engagement approach. Candidates will be offered the unique opportunity to help shape the evolution of a rapidly growing strategic consulting firm.
- Previous experience in strategy consulting, the technology industry, corporate strategy/business development, and/or private equity preferred
- Client-facing, project-based experience a plus
- Executive-level communication skills
- Superior analytical and problem solving skills
- Advanced financial modeling capabilities
- MBA or Graduate Degree from a leading university
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally on short notice
